Class Description

So, you’ve been in plays or musicals or other types of performances before, but never got to have a hand in creating them?

There are plenty of ways contemporary and historical theatre companies create performances, and in this course, we will be learning and creating scenes using 7 of them. In the end, we will end up with a varied and beautiful performance, which you will perform in front of an audience. These devising techniques focus on a variety of theatrical elements: text, body, space, light, and objects. We will be playing with and creating performance out of all of these and so much more, allowing you to find what excites and interests you most.

You will leave this class with a huge toolbox of techniques and exercises to create your own stunning performances!

MEET YOUR TEACHER

Madison (they/she) is a theatre maker, teacher and activist from Canada, living in the Netherlands. They have been teaching theatre and musical theatre since 2013. They taught various acting workshops for Concordia University from 2019-2022, and musical theatre classes for The Segal Centre Academy from 2016-2020. Most recently, they have worked as the acting coach on different projects for the Cauldron, teach acting workshops for different English-Language theatre companies in Amsterdam and Utrecht, and do one-on-one audition and acting coaching. They are a co-founder of Utopia Syndicate, which is a theatre collective that focuses on fostering hope through utopian speculation and prefigurative living. She also co-founded and directed Carleton Musical Theatre Society (Ottawa) in 2015, and Hey Lady! Productions (Montreal) in 2017. Madison holds a BFA in Performance Creation and a MA of Contemporary Theatre, Dance and Dramaturgy.
